What Does Working with Your Boarding School Student Actually Look Like?
Hi there!
Let’s talk about something I get asked a lot when meeting with parents: What does remote coaching really look like when your student is at boarding school?
At AGC, we’ve found that working remotely with boarding school students can not only be highly effective—but also flexible and meaningful—no matter where your student is located. We recognize that your student’s schedule can be jammed packed and we are willing to be flexible in order to make sessions work each week. Boarding schools each have their own unique structures, rhythms, and cultures. That’s why it’s so important to have a coach who can adapt to those dynamics and help students grow in ways that feel both realistic and sustainable.
When we begin working with a student, we coordinate with the school’s academic support team to build a session schedule that works best for everyone. But here’s the magic: our connection doesn’t stop when a session ends. Through the Voxer app, we’re able to offer daily support—yes, daily! Whether it’s a quick text message, voice message, or sharing a photo, this real-time communication tool helps students feel like we’re right there with them through both the successes and the challenges.
And trust me, they use it. I love getting messages like, “I just scored an 86% on my history exam!!” (cue happy dance) or hearing students work through more complex feelings—like navigating a shifting friendship or feeling homesick. We celebrate wins, process tough moments, and even share candid snapshots of daily life. These touches add so much richness to the coaching relationship.
During sessions, we focus on what each student needs most in the moment—whether that’s building emotional awareness, developing communication skills, or strengthening executive functioning. Often, it’s a blend of all three. Every student’s journey is different, and our support is just as individualized.
We also place a high value on open, two-way communication with families and schools. That means we’re regularly in touch with parents and academic teams to track progress and stay aligned on goals. Growth isn’t always linear—and that’s okay! If a student who’s been sleeping through the day starts going to lunch and attending social events, but still misses class, that’s still a shift. And those shifts are worth celebrating.
At AGC, success means helping students move away from stuck patterns and into new, healthier behaviors—step by step. Our layered, compassionate approach to support is one that students and families often say feels both meaningful and impactful.
So—want to work together? Let’s support your student in finding their rhythm and growing into their full potential, wherever they are.
Warmly,
Briar Wren
